Academic Experience

Research Assistant — University of Leicester, UK
1991–1994

  • Appointed by the Engineering Department to a robust control research project funded by Philips Lighting and run with a European consortium: SETPOINT-IPCOS in the Netherlands, KU Leuven in Belgium, and Delft and Eindhoven Universities of Technology.

  • Developed robust control methodologies to hold the dimensions of glass tubes by simultaneous manipulation of every accessible process variable affecting them, applied at Philips Lighting's specialist glass factory in Winschoten, the Netherlands.

  • Objectives: reduce dimensional variation across operating conditions to raise product quality and automate change-over between conditions to cut change-over time and increase flexibility.

Research Associate — University of Leicester
1994–1996

  • Appointed by the Engineering Department to lead sponsored research projects

  • Research into High-performance Aero Engine Control and Monitoring Systems — sponsored by Lucas Aerospace and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

  • Research into Advanced Traction and Braking Control — sponsored by European Gas Turbines and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

  • Research into Integrated Flight-Propulsion Control — sponsored by the Defence Research Agency (DRA).

Teaching — Control Engineering

Control engineering, taught at three institutions:

  •  2022–2025 — University of Bahrain:  undergraduate courses in Electronics & Electrical Engineering — Classical Control (junior level); Nonlinear Stability, Control and Estimation (senior level) — this course also included State-space Analysis & Design, and Optimal Control & Estimation using Linear Quadratic Methods.

  •  2005 — New York Institute of Technology (Bahrain):  Modern Control Theory, to MSc students in Electrical Engineering.

  •  1998–1999 — University of Bahrain:  MSc courses in Electrical & Electronics Engineering — Optimal Control; Digital Control.

  •  1992–1996 — University of Leicester (UK): demonstrator on the control laboratories for the MSc in Control Systems; weekly advanced control lectures and tutorial sessions for final-year undergraduates.
